A St. Paul man was flown to a Louisville hospital Thursday night after he was wounded in a shootout with sheriff's deputies.

According Kentucky State Police (KSP) reports, county deputies responded for a second time to a 911 call to a domestic dispute on St. Paul Road.

After arriving on the scene, Sergeant Mike Woosley and Deputy Tony Willen were talking to the unidentified wife of Jerry Cottrell Jr., no age given, 3950 St. Paul Road.

The deputies told KSP that during this conversation, Cottrell came out of a back room with a handgun and opened fire on the two deputies.

Woosley and Willen told KSP investigators they returned fire and bullets struck Cottrell twice.

Cottrell was flown to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment of his injuries. County Sheriff David Simon said that neither Woosley nor Willen were shot or injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Both Woosley and Willen are on administrative leave and the KSP investigation into the Thursday night shooting is ongoing.

Simon did not reveal any other details on what the couple were arguing about, but he said the administrative leave for the two deputies was a normal result of any incident in which a firearm is used. He said the leave could last up to two weeks.

Dispatchers recorded the second call as coming in at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
