BROWNSVILLE -- Coming into the season, Cougar middle school coach George Meredith felt his eighth-grade team would be "scary."
After something of a slow, first-period start, his Cougar team began showing why he felt that way as they blew out the Edmonson County Wildcats (1-3) 64-22 in their brand-new gym to open the new season.
The Cougars dressed 13 players for the game. All of them saw action and 10 of them made it into the scoring column. Four Cougars reached double figures.
Using a tenacious man-to-man defense that pressed the length of the floor, the Cougars forced the Wildcats into mistake after mistake as they blew out to an 11-2 lead. It could have been worse, but the Cougars suffered from some cold shooting in the first quarter and shot just one of four at the foul line. They led 13-4 heading into the second quarter.
The Cougars cranked it up a bit in the second period by outscoring the Wildcats 18-8. Wes Smith had seven of his 11 points and 7th-grader Travis Johnston had six of his game-high 12 points to lead the way for the visitors. Grayson County led 31-12 at the half.
If the Wildcats had any ideas of making a comeback in the second half, they were quickly extinguished as the Cougars completely shut them down in the third period. The Wildcats' only points in the third quarter came at the 2:40 mark when T. J. Massey scored on a rebound basket. Massey led his team in scoring with 10 points for the night.
It mattered little who Meredith used, the production kept coming. Chris Stewart had three three-pointers and finished with 11 points. Smith also hit a three-ball and sub Brian Hill connected from long range also for his three points.
Johnathan Higdon came off the bench and scored eight of his 10 points in the second half. Alphonso Soto added seven points and Chris McCoy had four. Aaron Deviney, Tyler Saltsman and Trevor Higdon had two points each to complete the scoring.
The Cougars will travel to Bowling Green on Thursday to take on Drake's Creek. The eighth-grade game will follow the seventh-grade contest, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
