MUNFORDVILLE -- The Cougar varsity basketball team continued to play its summer slate using a split squad as they traveled to Hart County for a pair of games Thursday.

In the opener, the Cougars led by six points with four minutes to go, but could not hold back the Raiders as they tied the score 42-42 as time expired. In the second game, the Cougars ran away from Edmonson County in the second half to claim a 50-30 victory.

HART COUNTY

The Raiders started the game with a hot hand, hitting five three-pointers in the first half to grab a 22-17 lead heading into the second half.

Hart led by as many as seven points, but an 8-1 Cougar run drew them to within a point of the lead, 14-13, with 8:16 to play. The Raiders then reeled off eight straight to go up by nine with 3:48 left. A free throw and Josh Smith's second three-pointer of the half drew the Cougars to within five as the first half expired.

Opening the second half, Grayson County went on a 10-4 run to grab its first lead of the game. Travis Lacefield hit a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 27-26 lead at the 13:48 mark. The lead changed hands four times in the next couple of minutes, then the teams were tied three times before the Cougars retook the lead.

A Ryan Butler three and and a Casey Johnston layup put the Cougars up by five 39-34 with 4:51 left. Another Lacefield three gave them a six-point lead, 42-36 with 4:08 left, but that would be all the Cougars could manage.

Leading by three with under a minute to play, Chase Richardson missed a golden opportunity to score right under the basket. Hart then tied it at 42 apiece on a three-pointer with 17 seconds left.

Looking to take the last shot, Lacefield brought the ball up court and was mugged just past half court. No foul was called and the Hart County guard went in for an uncontested layup that would have won the game, but he blew his shot as well. The Cougars rebounded the miss as the buzzer sounded and no overtime was played.

Grayson County finished the game with seven three-pointers, while the Raiders had six.

Smith, Johnston and Jon Meredith had eight points each to lead the Cougars. Richardson finished with seven and Lacefield had six. Butler finished with three points and Lance Boone had two to complete the scoring.

EDMONSON COUNTY

This was a close game in the first half, with both teams trading baskets in the early going. The Wildcats grabbed a 12-9 lead with 9:22 left, but Grayson County scored seven straight to grab a lead it would never relinquish. They led 18-14 at the half.

The Wildcats pulled to within three points, 29-26 with 8:10 left to play, but the Cougars outscored them 21-4 the rest of the way to turn the game into a runaway.

Graham Huffman scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the second half to lead the Cougar surge. Jared Clemons had nine, Kyle Skaggs had eight and Chris Elmore had seven.

Bryce Meredith, seeing his first action since turning an ankle at a tennis camp at Lindsey Wilson last week, had five points. Jordan Drake had four and Lincoln Skaggs had three to round out the scoring.
