ELIZABETHTOWN -- The Cougar JV softball team opened the season by dropping a tight pitcher's duel 3-2 in extra innings at Central Hardin on Thursday.

The Cougars held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but every time they took the lead, the lady Bruins would come back to tie the score.

Central's Emily Norris pitched all six innings to pick up the win. She gave up six Cougar hits, struck out three and walked two.

For the Cougars, Beth Schultz started and went the first three innings, giving up no hits and just one un-earned run.

Jackie Higdon came on in the fourth and unluckily picked up the loss. Higdon gave up three hits and two runs.

Grayson County scored in the first inning. Shelbi Carter beat out an infield hit, then stole second base. She went to third on a wild pitch, then scored when Jenna Cantway beat out a bunt single.

The Lady Bruins tied it in their half of the first. With one out, Schultz walked Kylee Brady, who then stole second base. Brady went to third on a ground out, then scored on an 0-2 wild pitch from Schultz.

The Cougars regained the lead in the fourth inning. Cantway again beat out an infield single and was replaced on the base paths by Desiree Waterman, who immediately stole second base.

Waterman reached third on a ground out, then scored on a two-out single by Higdon.

Higdon came on to pitch the fourth and got ahead of the leadoff batter, Sheena Priddy 1-2. Priddy seemed to be waiting for an off-speed pitch, and when Higdon obliged, Priddy drilled it past left fielder Ashley Arndell. Priddy made it all the way around for a home run, just beating the throw to the plate to tie the score at 2-2.

The Cougars threatened in the fifth, but Cristina majors was cut down at the plate, trying to score on a walking-steal attempt by Carter.

The Lady Bruins put a runner in scoring position with no one out in their half of the fifth, but Higdon struck out two batters and got out of the inning on a ground out.

Grayson County had two runners on in the sixth, but could not get them home, setting up the Lady Bruins' final at bat.

Pinch hitter Debra Linder began the sixth by hitting a high pop-up behind second base. Majors, in center field, ran a long way and got a glove on the ball, but it popped out for an error.

Higdon struck out the next batter, but the Lady Bruins successfully sacrificed Allen to second.

Kaelyn day then hit a slow roller to Alyssa Blessitt at third base. Blessitt bobbled the ball, then threw late to shortstop Terra Brooks covering at third.

Sam Sheeran ended the game, driving in Allen by hitting a slow ground ball behind the mound which Brooks could not make a play on.

The JV's will be back in action following the Spring Break when they play host to Whitesville Trinity on Monday, April 12. That game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
