WHY TEAR DOWN

HISTORIC PLACES?

Editor:

It is with deep sadness and horror that we observed the demolition of historical property and defacement of Main Street this week. I have lived here my 83 years and never have had to witness the intentional destruction which has such a negative impact on our town.

Through the years First Baptist has been a cooperative partner in community betterment. I recall so well in 1940 when Dr. T. Emerson Wortham, pastor of First Baptist, was elected president of our first Rotary Club.

Dr. Wortham served both Rotary and his church successfully with honor and the high esteem of Leitchfield citizens.

It is not my role to judge the rationale of those who chose destruction over preservation.

Such action, however, does call into question their stewardship of our community.

Maybe it's time for a law restricting historical destruction in downtown Leitchfield -- past time. -- Sarah C. Willis, Leitchfield.

MEDICAL COSTS

ARE HURTING

Editor:

I work at a pharmacy. It is heart-wrenching to see people come into the pharmacy and leave without getting their prescription filled.

They are elderly people on fixed incomes; they are parents of young children who cannot afford to get antibiotics their children need; and they are people with no insurance who don't have enough money to buy their medicine.

Even the people with insurance sometimes have to turn away because they can't afford the co-pay associated with the type of medication prescribed.

I am voting for Barry Metcalf for U.S. senator because he cares about these people and has the intestinal fortitude to try to do something about it. -- Jackie Reynolds, Rich-mond, Ky.
