HAWESVILLE -- The middle-school boys basketball teams advanced in league tournament play with wins this weekend and on Monday.

In Saturday afternoon's opening round, the seventh-grade team got scoring from 12 players as they had little trouble in dispatching Butler County 51-24.

The eighth-grade team avenged an earlier blowout loss to the Muhlenberg North Stars with a thrilling, 44-43 overtime win.

In Monday's eighth-grade semi-final, Grayson County beat the host Hancock County Cougars 49-33 to advance to the league final this Friday against Ohio County.

7TH-GRADE GAME

Grayson County gave up the first two points of the game, but then reeled off 17 straight and led 17-2 at the end of the first period.

The Cougars led 25-6 at the half, and 38-9 at the end of the third period.

The Bears' Matt Hudnall scored 10 points to lead all scorers. All Hudnall's points came in the fourth quarter as Grayson County emptied it's considerable bench to let everyone get in on the action.

Travis Johnston and Johnathan Higdon led the Cougars in scoring with eight apiece. Wes Smith had seven, Chris McCoy had six, Tyler Saltsman had five and Adrian Board had four.

Trevor Higdon added three points while Alphonso Soto, Bennett Skaggs, Aaron Deviney Bryant Clemons and Matt Lee all scored two points.

8TH-GRADE GAMES

Against the Stars, the Cougars led just twice in the game. Travis Johnston scored the first two points of the game to give them their first lead. Johnston then scored the last basket of the game to give the Cougars the win.

The Stars' Aaron Morris had 25 points to lead all scorers, but Coach George Meredith said he was pleased with the defensive job his Cougars put up.

"Chris McCoy had a great game guarding Morris," Meredith said. "Morris had to work for every point he got. Nothing was easy."

With the score tied and time running down in the overtime, Johnston rebounded a missed North shot and traveled the length of the court to put in a layup as time expired to give Grayson County the win.

Sean Embry led the Cougars in scoring with 12 points, while Jordan Mudd had 11. Johnston finished with 10 points, Wes Smith had seven and McCoy finished with four.

Against Hancock on Monday. the Cougars played what Meredith said was their best game of the season as they led from start to finish..

Hancock had beaten the Cougars by 28 points at the end of January. Hancock's Michael Moseby scored 21 points in that game, but McCoy held him to just 12 points on Monday.

Meredith said he made some adjustments to his press offense which allowed his team to successfully attack the Hancock press, which had given them fits in the previous game.

Defensively, the Cougars were air tight.

"Travis Johnston took five charges on the night," Meredith enthused. "There are some seasons when we don't get five charges."

Embry led the Cougars with 12 points, while Mudd and McCoy had 11 each. Johnston finished with seven points, Chris Stewart had six and Wes Smith had two to complete the scoring.

The seventh-grade Cou-gars will play a semi-final match this Thursday evening at 5:30 against Muhlenberg South. The eighth-graders will play in the final on Friday night at 5:30 against Ohio County.
