LEITCHFIELD -- Just three days after playing their best game of the season, the Lady Cougars played probably their worst as they dropped a 45-36 decision to visiting Breck-inridge County Thursday evening.

Playing a team that had won just four games coming in, the Lady Cougars (8-6) shot out to a nine-point lead in the first period, then just seemed to quit playing.

After trailing 12-3, the visiting Lady Tigers (5-10) put together a 13-0 run that gave them a 16-12 lead with 5:49 remaining in the second period.

Grayson County could not get shots to fall, and the Lady Tigers were outhustling them to rebounds and loose balls.

Grayson County came to life a bit at that point and outscored the visitors 9-2 and took a 23-18 lead into the halftime intermission.

Grayson County got itself into foul trouble as second-half play progressed. Junior Lee Ann Wood picked up her fourth foul with 1:42 left to play in the third period.

The lady Tigers meanwhile were fighting back again. They tied the score 28-28 with 46 seconds left on a short jumper from Doneille Wethington.

Molly Beeler gave the Cougars another lead with a 15-footer, then Breck's Fallan Butler canned a three-pointer to put the Lady Tigers up by one. Brittany Bird closed out the scoring by hitting a layup with under a second to go to give Grayson County a 32-31 lead heading into the final period.

The Lady Cougars scored first, but Breck countered with eight straight points to assume control 39-34 with 2:50 to play.

Grayson County was forced to try to put the Lady Tigers at the line, but Breck hit six of eight down the stretch and the Lady Cougars could not score in the last two and a half minutes of the game.

Bird led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 11 points. Tiffany Clemons had nine and Beeler finished with eight. Wood and Jara Vega Velez had four apiece to complete the scoring.

Grayson County will face a stiff test Monday when they travel to Owen-sboro to take on the Apollo E'Gals. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
