Ice easy on electricity lines

The winter storm that swept through Kentucky Sunday caused relatively few power outages, according to reports from utility companies to the Kentucky Public Service Commission.

"Most of those who lost power had it restored quickly," PSC Executive Director Tom Dorman said. "The utility companies had brought in extra crews and were well-prepared to handle the ice."

In contrast to the February 2003 ice storm that left as much as three inches of ice in many places, Sunday's storm left less than an inch of ice.

In 2003, ice knocked out power to more than 100,000 customers, and some were without power for more than a week.

"We haven't seen that kind of extreme damage, with poles snapped and entire trees across lines this year," Dorman said. "The Sunday storm covered a much wider area," he said, "but caused fewer problems."

Kentucky Utilities, which supplies Leitchfield, reported that 9,500 customers across Kentucky were affected by the 1-day storm, but all power had been restored by Monday morning.

After a 1-day break Monday, winter returned Tuesday, with schools in Grayson County closing at 1 p.m.
