LEITCHFIELD -- After twice erasing double-digit deficits and finally taking a lead in the fourth quarter, the Lady Cougars let the game slip away from them as visiting Whitesville Trinity won 60-57.

Grayson County (5-4) got off to a terrible start, committing five turnovers, missing some wide-open shots and giving up 10 straight points in the first three minutes of play.

Whitesville's Rachel Kae-lin scored eight of her 14 points in the first quarter as the Lady Raiders (8-5) pulled out to a 23-12 lead.

The Lady Cougars began fighting back in the second period. Tasha Farris capped off a 7-0 run with a three-pointer with 1:05 left in the half that cut the deficit to four points, 28-24.

All that hard work was somewhat nullified, though, as Whitesville scored the last four points of the half to take an eight-point lead, 31-24 heading into the intermission.

The Lady Raiders made it eight in a row as they scored twice at the beginning of the third quarter to go up by 12, 36-24 at the 6:32 mark.

Grayson County trailed by nine, 45-36 after scoring the final four points of the period.

The Lady Cougars opened the fourth period with a layup from Lee Ann Wood and a pair of free throws from Brittany Bird that narrowed the margin to five points, 45-40 at the 6:39 mark.

Following a Trinity bucket, Laura Downs and Bird hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut it to a single point, 47-46 and the crowd at Cougar Gym was standing on its feet.

Trinity called a timeout to talk things over, but they could not get their shots to fall in their next three possessions.

Grayson County was also missing its shots, but at the four-minute mark, Cindy Langley found an opening and drove into the lane. Her left-handed layup gave the Lady Cougars their first lead of the game at 48-47 and the crowd was in a frenzy.

Trinity answered with two free throws to regain the lead, but Molly Beeler buried a 15-footer from the corner and was fouled with 3:16 left to play. her free throw put Grayson County on top by two, 51-49.

That was the last time the Lady Cougars would hold the lead. Trinity answered to tie, then took a 53-51 lead following a Lady Cougar turnover.

Grayson County tied it one more time at 53-53, but then gave up five straight and could not climb back in it.

Bird led all scorers with 18 points, while Wood finished with 15. Beeler had seven and Downs finished with five.

Langley scored four on the night, while Farris and Loren Swift had three each. Tiffany Clemons finished the night with two points to complete the scoring.
