The Clarkson Elementary School held a candlelight induction ceremony for its Junior Beta Club Tuesday night, December 9, 2003.

The club inducted 23 new members from the fifth grade. Students must have an A-B average and display good citizenship to be invited into membership.

This year the club has already been very busy. They built a float for the Honeyfest Parade and won 1st place in their division and also sold concessions at the Honeyfest Beauty Pageant.

They hosted a Red Ribbon Day Luncheon in the school cafeteria to encourage students to "Say No" to drugs and alcohol.

The students brought in enough items to fill 17 shoebox gifts to be sent worldwide for Christmas and they helped to collect more than a truckload of canned goods for the Harvest of the Heart food drive.

You can see them at Wal-Mart ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on Dec. 19 and they will also be buying gifts for an Angel Tree family. After Christmas the Beta Club will be raising funds for the Make-a-Wish Foun-dation.

The biggest project the club sponsors is their scholarship program. Each year they raise money to fund 2-3 scholarships for GCHS seniors that were in the Clarkson Junior Beta Club in the fifth grade. Last year they gave three $300 scholarships.

This year's officers are: Jordan Williams, president; Anna Mae Decker, vice president; Amber Oller, secretary; and Paige Higdon, treasurer. The sponsors are: Julie Bessinger, Sandy Kiper, Chris Carter, Ginger Crain, Angela Elmore, and Kelly Skaggs.
