Grayson Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Hammons said Terry Lawson, of Leitchfield, pulled a gun at the Leitchfield Police Station and forced Amanda Clements, also of Leitchfield, into his car and drove away.
The couple were at the police station to exchange custody of their child, Hammons said.
The child was dropped off at an Oller Street address in Leitchfield, before Lawson drove toward Breckinridge County.
Hammons said police tried to intercept the couple at Oller Street, but missed them.
The chase slowed at the intersection of Hwys. 737 and 259 North in Breckinridge, and Clements jumped out of the car and ran into a nearby store, Hammons said.
He said Lawson followed with the gun, and store employees called the Breckinridge County Sheriff reporting an armed robbery.
He said Clements was forced back into the car, but police caught up with the couple in McDaniels, where there was a two-hour standoff at a Carwile Drive address.
Leitchfield Patrolman Kevin Henderson was able to talk Lawson into surrendering, Hammons said.
Lawson is is involuntarily hospitalized at Hardin Memorial Hospital in the mental inquest ward, he said.
Hammons said several charges are pending against Lawson in both Grayson and Breckinridge counties.
He said Clements and the child were shaken but neither was seriously injured.
