For the first time since 1989, the Cougar Band is marching its way to state competition Saturday, Oct. 25 at Franklin-Simpson High School.
The decision was made at KMEA Regional Band Competition held last weekend at Marshall County. The AA division was fiercely competitive with 18 bands vying for one of eight positions that would send the group to the state semi-finals.
The Cougars put on a great show, earning their third distinguished rating for the year with a score of 81.95.
The Cougars trip home from Marshall County was marked with a police escort from the parkway ramp through town, around the courthouse and to the high school.
Monday morning Band Director Jason Gossett pointed to the plaque received from the state for its distinguished rating over the weekend.
"That is what the state recognizes. I can't tell you how important that is," Gossett said. It is only the second distinguished plaque Grayson County has ever received from KMEA.
This Saturday, the students will face 16 bands from across the state on the competition field at Franklin-Simpson.
Grayson County will take the field at 12:30 p.m. along with Larue County, Apollo, Muhlenberg North, Caldwell, Elizabethtown, Hopkinsville, and Calloway bands.
The Marching Cougars have faced each of these bands throughout the year. However, eight bands from the Eastern part of the state will be new competition. Those bands include Paris, Shelby County, Harrison, South Oldham, Madison Central, Mercer County, Conner and Adair County.
From the semi-finals, four of the highest scoring AA bands will go on to compete in finals at Western Kentucky University to compete with bands from all divisions.
Both semi-finals and finals will be held Saturday, Oct. 25.
