Grayson County High School Marching Cougars were named Grand Champions at competition Saturday, Oct. 11 at McLean County. The win earned them a spot in regional competition at Marshall County this coming weekend.
The band scored its second Distinquished performance and again placed first overall in the AA division. They rated Best Percussion and Color Guard ranked second.
After much hard work and many performances this year, the Cougar Band was pleased to be named Reserve Grand Champion at the Logan County competition on Oct. 4.
The band year started in July with two weeks of band camp. Camp became more difficult for members when Adam Flener, a tuba player, was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. The band's first performance was at the grand opening of the Wal-Mart Super Center followed by the Labor Day Parade and several football games.
The Cougars performed their show "Color Fades to Gray" at Caverna on Sept. 6 where they placed third in the AA division. Compe-tition at Glasgow on Saturday, Sept. 13 brought another third place performance for the group.
The band performed at a national competition in Louisville on Sept. 20. Although they did not place, the trip was marked with group pictures and an encouraging visit from Adam Flener.
The next performance was a concert for the Honeyfest on Thursday, Sept 25, then on to Murray State University for an overnight performance on Saturday, Sept 27. The Marching Cougars made the finals in ninth place.
The band marched through the Caneyville Homecoming Parade on Friday, Oct. 3 with Flener playing his tuba as he was pushed through the streets in a wheelchair. The next competition was in Logan County the following Saturday.
Flener played with the band although he sat in a chair in the pit section. The band was awarded first place in the AA division. The percussion received first place and the color guard received second place with only one point difference between second and first place. The band was awarded Overall Grand Champion.
The Marching Cougar Band performed two shows for the Grayson County community Friday, Oct. 10 before going to McLean County for competition the next day.
