LEITCHFIELD -- The middle-school football program ended its regular season with a pair of games against Edmonson County at home last Thursday.

The eighth-grade team had an easy time of it in the rain, rolling over the Wildcats 28-0, but the seventh-graders let one slip away in a 20-14 overtime loss.

In the eighth-grade game, the Cougars caught an early break when Nathan Logsdon recovered an Edmonson County fumble at the Wildcat 26. Two Sean Embry running plays later, the Cougars were on the board. Embry then ran for two points, and with 5:20 left in the first period it was 8-0.

Embry later came up with an interception near midfield which he returned to the Wildcat 17. With 54 second left in the first quarter, Brian Grant carried in from a yard out. The try for two failed and the period ended with the Cougars leading 14-0.

Rain, which had been threatening all night, began to fall in earnest at this point, and the rest of the game was played in a downpour.

The Cougars took over just before the end of the half at their own 47. A fumble on first down moved it back to the 30, but quarterback Jacob Hicks ran for nine to make it third-and-17. Hicks found Embry over the middle, and the speedy back did the rest, carrying 61-yards for another score. Grant carried the two-point conversion and with five seconds left in second period, it was 22-0.

The Cougars scored once more, with 2:48 left in the third period. Following a short punt which went out of bounds at the Wildcat 38, the Cougars took five plays to move it in. Hicks carried 28 yards for the final score.

The seventh-grade game saw the Cougars fall behind early, rally back to take a lead, then give up a last-gasp touchdown for a tie. In the overtime, the Wildcats scored and the Cougars could not answer and absorbed the loss.

The Cougars fumbled on their first possession and the Wildcats took advantage, moving 21 yards in five plays to take an 8-0 lead.

Grayson County answered back immediately when running back Jonathan Higdon broke free and raced 69 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt failed and the score stayed at 8-6.

Grayson County took a lead just before the end on the second period after they blocked a punt and recovered it at the Edmonson 10. Higdon scored at the 1:42 mark, then Wes Smith hit Terrance Weedman on the two-point try to make it 14-8.

The Wildcats tied things with just 1:39 left to play, but could not convert the extra point to force overtime.

The Wildcats went first from the 10-yard line and scored in two plays.

The Cougars got their chance but went backwards on three straight plays. A fourth-down pass failed to give the Wildcats the win.
