LEITCHFIELD -- Following in the footsteps of the Cougar varsity, the JV football team put a 46-20 shellacking on the visiting Edmonson County Wildcats Monday evening.

Just a couple of days after the varsity had pounded the Wildcats 57-14, the JV's scored on all five first-half possessions then cruised to the big win.

On the Wildcats' first possession, the Cougars got the benefit of a bad snap on a fourth-down punt attempt at midfield and took over at the Wildcat 24. Three plays later, junior Joey Elmore carried in from 12 yards out to give Grayson County a lead they never relinquished. Sophomore Jordan Drake ran in the two-point conversion and the Cougars led 8-0.

A few moments later, Chris Elmore picked off a Wildcat pass at the 50 and returned the ball to the Edmonson County six to set up the next score. Drake carried two yards on second down for the touchdown and freshman Logan Clemons carried for two to make it 16-0 at the 4:57 mark.

Just before the end of the first period, the Wildcats downed a punt at the Cougar two-yard line. On the last play of the quarter, sophomore Nathan Gordon broke away to move the ball from the Cougar 10 all the way to the Wildcat 26, a gain of 64 yards. Four plays later, sophomore Brett Clemons ran 15 yards for another score. This time the conversion failed and the Cougars led 22-0.

The Cougars defense suffered a letdown on the next series. The Wildcats returned the kick to their own 34, then on first down their quarterback got loose down the sideline, then cut back for a 66-yard touchdown run. The point try failed and at the 7:38 mark the score stood at 22-6.

The Cougars answered with an eight-play, 67-yard drive for another score at the 4:12 mark. Gordon carried in for the TD from 10 yards out, then carried in the two-pointer to make it 30-6.

The Wildcats turned the ball over on downs at their own 46 with 1:52 left and the Cougars wasted little time in turning it into another score. Sophomore Matt Graham ran five yards to the 41, then Chris Elmore found the left side wide open as he romped the rest of the way for the touchdown. Josh Elmore ran in the two-point try and the halftime ended with the Cougars ahead 38-6.

The Wildcats went to the air opening the third quarter and found some success. They moved 66 yards in nine plays, capped by a 31-yard pass completion for a touchdown at the 6:44 mark. A two-point try failed and the score stood at 38-12.

The score stayed that way until late in the fourth quarter when the Wildcats found the end zone once more. This time they moved 44 yards and scored on a four-yard run at the 2:53 mark. A two-point conversion was successful to make it 38-20.

That touchdown seemed to fire up the Cougar offense, which had been quiet the whole second half. Joey Elmore returned the kickoff 15 yards to the Cougar 43. Clemons ran it into Wildcat territory at the 30, then freshman Jonathan Green got loose to the three. However, the Cougars were guilty of an illegal block in the back and the ball was moved back to the 28. Three plays later, Green carried 15 yards for the touchdown. Graham ran in the two-pointer to make the final score 46-20.

The JV Cougars will hit the road for the first time next Monday when they travel to McLean County to take on the Cougars. Game time there is set for 6 p.m.
