LEITCHFIELD -- For the third straight year, the Cougar football team has earned the right to keep the coveted Tobacco Stick painted a bright orange and navy blue.

This time it was done in rather spectacular fashion as the Cougars scored early and often on their way to a rousing 57-14 win. Seniors Timmy Langley and Brandon DeWitt both scored a pair of touchdowns and the Cougar defense returned two interceptions for scores. Senior Gavin Logsdon added a 32-yard field goal for good measure. It all added up to a one-sided, Homecoming win for the Cougars.

Grayson County wasted little time tallying the first score, taking just three plays and 49 seconds to get into the end zone. Langley connected with Logsdon on a 59-yard pass play on second down, then carried in from the five for the score. A bad snap caused the extra-point attempt to fail and the Cougars led 6-0 at the 11:11 mark.

The Cougars got on the board again at the 4:37 mark after the defense forced the Wildcats to punt deep in their own territory. Taking over at the Edmonson County 30, the Cougars took seven plays to reach pay dirt. Langley connected with DeWitt from nine yards out for the score, then ran in for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Edmonson County made things interesting at this point, cranking up a 13-play, 81-yard drive for their first score. The Wildcats converted a fourth-and-18 play during the drive when quarterback B. J. Russell hit J. R. Graham at the five. Russell then carried in on a bootleg for the TD. A pass attempt failed and the score stood at 14-6 at the 2:11 mark.

The Cougars answered right back with a nine-play, 83-yard drive of their own. Brian Sandlin had a 16-yard carry and Langley had one of 27 yards during the drive. Langley did the honors one more time, carrying five yards for the score. Logsdon's kick was good to make it 21-6 at the 9:36 mark.

It didn't take long for the Cougars to score again. On second down following the kickoff, junior cornerback Chris Elmore stepped in front of a Russell pass at the Wildcat 26-yard line and scampered untouched into the end zone. Logsdon added the extra point and with 8:46 left in the half, the Cougars led 28-6.

The Wildcats had success on their next drive, going 80 yards in 12 plays. They faced a third-and-18 at the Cougar 35, but Russell found Graham open at the goal line for the score at the 2:08 mark. The Wildcats ran in for two to make it 28-14.

Edmonson County threatened to score again after a Cougar fumble gave them the ball at the Grayson County 34. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the ball to the 19. The visitors moved to a first-and-goal at the eight, but senior John Tilford came up big with an interception at the five to kill the drive and send the game into the halftime intermission with the score still 28-14.

It was all Grayson County in the second half. After the Cougars forced a punt, they moved from their own 49 to the Wildcat 15 but were forced to try a field goal. Logsdon had missed earlier from 37 yards out, but this time he was perfect from 32 yards and the Cougars led 31-14.

The defense forced another punt and the offense took over at their own 40. On first down, DeWitt carried 20 yards to the Wildcats 40, then Sandlin broke open at midfield and went untouched for another score. The kick failed and at the 5:07 mark the score stood at 37-14.

Edmonson County hurt themselves on their next possession, trying a fake punt and run that fooled no one and gave the ball to the Cougars at the Wildcat 38. Seven plays later Grayson County was on the board once more with DeWitt carrying in from four yards out just before the end of the quarter. Logsdon's kick made it 44-14.

Neither team had success on their next possessions before the Wildcats took over at their own 13. A roughing-the-passer call on the Cougars got the Wildcats out of a third-and-20 hole and gave them a first down at the 18. However, on the next play, sophomore Nathan Gordon picked off a Russell pass at the 38 and returned it for another TD, running over teammate Korey Fulkerson at about the five as he did so. Jordan Drake kicked the extra point to make it 51-14.

The Wildcats were totally out of gas by this point and on their next possession gave the Cougars the ball at the one-yard line following a botched snap from center. Drake powered in on the first play. The kick failed, but the Cougars could celebrate their overwhelming Homecoming victory.
