LEITCHFIELD -- Efforts to have the Corps of Engineers change the way water levels are handled at Rough River Lake will be put on hold at least until the start of next year.

The Grayson County Tourism Commission listened to commissioner Chuck Tempfer say that the best way to handle the situation would be to get local state legislature members involved in having the state pass an initiative, which would then be presented to congress in Washington, D.C. Tempfer added that now is not the time to pursue it as elections are upcoming and the representatives would not have the time to handle such matters.

Tempfer also said it would be best to wait until a manager was appointed to the local Corps of Engineers office at Rough River Lake. He said it would probably be at least October before that was accomplished.

Tempfer, who is the business manager at Rough River State Resort Park, also reported the park and businesses around the lake had experienced one of the best Fourth of July holidays in many years. He said this year's fireworks show had received some additional funding from Lafayette that made it a very special event.

In other business, the commission approved advertising grants for the Grayson County Agriculture/Recreation Board's annual rodeo, and for the Clarkson Honeyfest. Another grant request, for a local shrimp harvest festival, was tabled until more information about the event could be gathered.

Another item tabled by the commission concerned attempts to have collectible items on sale in the commission's offices on South Main Street. The commission has decided on the items it wants to make available for sale, but it hopes to be able to have a tourism logo applied to all the items. They weren't particularly happy with the logo supplied by the University of Louisville's Marketing Department at the completion of its marketing survey.

The commission will look into the possibility of having a different logo developed by the marketing classes at Grayson County High School when the new school year begins next month.

Executive Director Ilsa Johnson informed the commission she still needs volunteers to work the commission's booth at the upcoming Kentucky State Fair, which runs from Aug. 14 to Aug. 24. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer their time should contact Johnson at the commission's office at 259-2735.
