Guard rails needed on 259

Dear Editor,

I am writing concerning the need for guard rails at two separate areas in the Eveleigh area. About seven miles out there is a big drop off on each side of an embankment. There is another drop off just past that part leading into the eight mile mark of Brandenburg Road. If a motorist went off the road, the car would end up in the river, approximately 80-100 feet down.

Eveleigh Hill has been the scene of several accidents and one death. My sister-in-law totaled a car last March. My father was hit by a trailer hauling a four wheeler that came loose while on a motorcycle. Besides my family, there have been countless others -- some of which have gone off over toward the river.

Considering there are guard rails in areas where there is only an 8-10 foot drop, I really can't understand why that guard rails are not in these areas.

I contacted the highway department several years ago about this matter and was told that someone would have to get killed there before any action would be taken.

After my sister-in-law's wreck, I contacted the highway department out of Elizabethtown again. I told him wat I had been told earlier about a death. He was upset that I received such a response. He came down and did a report and even called me back after he finished.

He agreed that there needed to be one in both places. He said, he would send the report to Frankfort, but that it could be years before anything was done. Something about how the money is allotted was the reason. I would sincerely like to see the placement of these guard rails as this road is well traveled by commercial, as well as private vehicles.
