BROWNSVILLE -- The middle school Lady Cougars had a long ride home following Monday's trip down to Brownsville to take on Edmonson County.

In the opener, the seventh graders faced the daunting task of trying to find a way to overcome the Wildcats' 6-foot-2 center Natasha Hunt. After trailing by just three points at the half, a scoreless third quarter took them out of the game in a 28-20 loss.

The eighth grade team faced a different dilemma. Coming into the game, the Lady Cougars' only loss came at the hands of the Wildcats and they were looking for revenge. What they got instead was a solid whipping, 53-20, from a team that looks like it might be destined for greatness.

SEVENTH-GRADE GAME

The Lady Wildcat coach was cautious about being too excited about his big center, saying she was very young and needed a lot of work, but she showed a lot of poise on the floor. It appears she has been coached well in her earlier years as she made very few of the mistakes toward which big girls sometimes tend.

She never put the ball on the floor and never brought the ball down below her head. On lobs from out of bounds, or from the wings, she would catch the ball high, turn and put it in. On several rebound baskets she would catch and put it back without ever bringing the ball down.

Hunt led all scorers in the game with 10 points, but she did not play the whole way, and left midway through the fourth quarter to dress for the eighth grade game.

The Lady Cougars played very well in the first half, staying within striking distance the whole way. A Kelsie Skaggs layup at the 2:59 mark of the second period brought the Lady Cougars to within a point of the lead, 11-10. The Wildcats' Sara Thomas scored the last basket of the half to send the teams to the locker rooms at 13-10.

Grayson County could not find the basket in the third quarter and was outscored 11-0 to fall out of contention. When Amanda Stewart hit a layup to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, it marked 15 unanswered points for the Lady Wildcats as they opened a 26-10 lead.

With the subs in the game, Grayson County outscored Edmonson 10-4 in the final period to make the score a little more respectable.

Tiffany Brooks led the Lady Cougars with five points, while Ashley Williams had four. Skaggs, Taylor Houchin, Courtney Hodge, Amanda Mudd and Kelli Williams all had two points apiece, and Jackie Higdon had one to complete the scoring.

The Lady Cougar seventh-graders are now 3-5 on the season.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME

The Lady Wildcats came into this game with a 10-1 record. The only blot on that record was a 32-30 loss at Barren County. Against the Lady Cougars, Edmonson County had 32 points at the half.

Grayson County was never in the game as Edmonson jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and led 20-7 at the end of the first period. They led 32-9 at the half.

The super-quick Lady Wildcats are spearheaded by guard Alex Clemmons, who finished with a game-high 17 points. They press and run at every opportunity and had the Lady Cougars frustrated and out of their game from the very start.

At least in the early going, the Lady Wildcats seemed to be in the right spot at the right time as they picked up loose balls and got numerous offensive rebounds that led to points. This is a team that looks like it might contend for a regional crown in three or four years.

Brittany Bird led the scoring for the Lady Cougars, finishing with seven points, while Rebecca Meredith had four. Jessica Williams had three, and Laura Dennis, Natoshia Clemons and Jayme Blessitt all had two. The Lady Cougar eighth graders now stand at 5-2 on the season.
