Ten Grayson County Middle School students participated in a robot competition at Western Kentucky University on Saturday, November 2. The students, along with their teachers, Sheila Meredith and Greatchen Gilkey and their mentors, Jarrod Graybeal, GCMS Computer Tech; John Meredith, GCHS student; and Derek Clemons, Community Mentor from MTD all returned home with the 1st place Overall Award, 2nd place Written Competition and 2nd place Robotic Race Competition.

The robotic competition originated with a Gender Equality and Engineering Workshop hosted by WKU.

As part of the workshop kits to build the robots were provided on the condition that the school brought a team in for the first ever middle school division of the Kentucky Bluegrass Robotic Competition.

The competition is already offered for high school teams but this was the first ever opportunity for the middle schools.

Part of the requirements for the workshop, which took place over fall break, was to have at least two females on the team. In addition to giving up part of their fall break, these students also spent three afternoons working on the robot and the paper that was required.

The paper told how the students assembled their robot, named "G.C."

To learn more about the project and get a look at "G.C." check out the middle school webpage at www.grayson.k12.ky.us/index.htm then click on the middle school link and look for "Robots."
