ELIZABETHTOWN -- The Cougar men's golf team got its season under way Monday afternoon by traveling to Elizabethtown's Pine Valley Golf Resort to take on the Central Hardin Bruins in a nine-hole, stroke-play match.

With senior Ryan Bratcher and sophomore Trenton Fleener having off days, the Cougars suffered a narrow, four-stroke defeat in the varsity match, 168-164. The JV squad, with seventh-grader Travis Lampton and eighth-grader Kyle Skaggs leading the way, defeated the Bruin JVs 183-211.

Senior Daniel Dennis had the best round of the day for the Cougars, shooting a one-over 37 on the Pine View's front nine. Only Central Hardin's Brandon Young was better than Dennis on the day, shooting an even-par 36 to lead the Bruins.

Bratcher and Fleener both struggled in their opening match, coming in with identical rounds of 44. Senior Michael Critchelow had the other scoring round for the Cougars, shooting a 43. Aaron Wilson (46) and Nolan Taylor (52) had non-scoring rounds.

Lampton and Skaggs were solid all day for the Cougar JVs. The highlight of the day for Skaggs had to be the second hole, when he hit his second shot inside five feet of the pin, then knocked down the putt for a birdie three.

Blake Collins and Ryan Bessinger both had scoring rounds of 48, while newcomer Ryan Bellandir shot a non-scoring round of 59.

New head golf coach Barry Alexander and his assistant, Reece Grubbs, are still looking for the best combination of players to go through the season with. According to Grubbs, some changes in the lineup could be made in the near future. This Saturday, the boys will head to Bowling Green to take part in the Warren Central Invitational, while the two Cougar girls, Leslie Hart and Shaina Green, will take part in the Western Hills Invitational, in Frankfort.
