Cycling is an excellent hobby and source of exercise but it is important to remember that bikes are subject to the rules of the road just as motor vehicles.
"Riding bicycles can be enjoyable for everyone. When riding on streets and highways obey traffic rules and regulations as though you are driving an automobile. Intersections can be very dangerous even if you have the right of way. Drivers should be on the look out for cyclist. Because of their narrow profile they are hard to see. Cyclist should always yield to traffic, this is one of the main causes of accidents with bicycles. Wearing a helmet and bright colors is very important.
Parents please remember when your children start riding their bikes on the roadway, they are no longer riding on toys, they are now considered vehicles. Giving them driving tips and encouraging them to follow all the rules and regulations and helping them to read and recognize street signs will not only keep them safe while riding their bikes but it will also help them become smart and responsible drivers in the future."
-Officer Margaret Fey
Leitchfield Police Dept.
The City of Leitchfield mandates in ordinance 73.01 all persons "operating a bicycle shall obey all traffic signs, signals and laws applicable to motor vehicles."
Teaching your children about bike safety should include the proper hand signals.
Cyclist are responsible for obeying all rules of the road, including stop signs, traffic lights, yields, and speed limits. Cyclist should always ride with the traffic as close to the right side of the road as possible.
Motor vehicles should only pass a cyclist if it is completely safe to do so giving them about three feet of distance between car and bike as you pass.
If you are interested in starting biking check out the local bike shops for more information on bike trails or excursions. Chances are your area has more people interested and another group can be on their way to fun and fitness.
Be sure to follow all laws and wear safety equipment to make your time more enjoyable. Also encourage your children to join you in bike riding but make sure they, too, are safely outfitted for the adventure.
