Committee members were worried about making their $84,000 goal. After the counting was complete every member of the committee was astounded to learn the finishing total.
Michelle Heaverin commented that more people were involved this year. A total of 36 teams from 27 organizations pulled together to raise money.
Most of the teams were active last year and Heaverin suspects each group set their sights just a little higher this year.
Also three family teams really raised their efforts and brought in significantly more donations than had in the previous year. The families are very dedicated to Relay for Life because they have faced cancer with their loved ones.
Luminary sales were also up. The remembrance lights brought in $3,300 the night of the walk.
An auction was held the night of the walk. The new event was very popular raising $1,700 for the cause.
About 600 people attended the walk to show their support of loved ones facing and surviving cancer and remembering those who have passed on due to cancer.
Survivors led the walk followed by the supports and then everyone was allowed to walk the track. This year 80 survivors were honored at the ceremony, that is double the number from last year.
Awards were also given in several events. The best campsite award went to Leitchfield First General Baptist Church. The best theme award was taken by the Women's Club. Wal-Mart won the most spirit award. MTD got the "most money by a team" award. This was the first year to offer a "most money by a not-for-profit group" award which was awarded to The Women's Club.
Relay for life is a year long effort by many groups. Next year's committee will begin planning in January with a kick off in February or March.
