GRAYSON COUNTY -- Are my children developing good health habits? Should I be watching for signs of diabetes? How will I know if grandfather is having a heart attack?

Health questions pop up in our minds all the time but how often do we actually get answers for them?

To offer another avenue of information the Lincoln Trail Health Department has a new employee, Julie Cottrell, Community Health Educator.

Cottrell is originally from Elizabethtown but she has lots of family around the area. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University just before Christmas, 2001, and began looking for a job.

On Christmas day Cottrell opened the newspaper and listed in the classified pages was her first job- Wanted: Community Health Educator.

Being a community health educator is like being a health teacher for the public. Cottrell will work with senior citizens, children and teen, young adults, thirty somethings, and baby boomers.

Julie Cottrell is very excited about her opportunities in the area. Her reception to the area has been wonderful with such friendly people around. She likes Grayson County's down home atmosphere.

Cottrell has a busy schedule because she wants to be out and involved in the community, meeting everyone!

Already Cottrell is starting strong by getting involved in the Anti-Drug Coalition, the new Teen Pregnancy Coalition and Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center's Diabetes Support Group.

She is amazingly dedicated to our health concerns and habits, but she isn't going to force changes on anyone. Her focus is on raising awareness of our health habits, providing facts, listening and answering questions and helping to prevent health problems.

Cottrell has many experiences, as well as, her education to draw reference from. She worked at Charter Ridge Behavioral Health, Mental Health Association, and a runaway home for teens in Lexington.

While her office is located at the Lincoln Trail Health Department on East White Oak Street, Julie Cottrell is often out and about in the community. For more information about community health call 259-3141.
