GRAYSON COUNTY -- After staying with the heavily-favored Ohio County Lady Eagles throughout the first half, the Lady Cougar varsity gave up 24 points in the third quarter and were outscored 36-18 in the second half as Ohio County beat Grayson County 67-44 on Homecoming Night.

A combination of outside play from guards Jill Fulkerson and Kara Desper and the inside strength and quickness of forward Julie Leach proved to be a lethal combination for the Lady Cougars (5-17). Leach led all scorers in the game with 23 points, many coming on second chance baskets, or from passes from Fulkerson on back-door cuts. Desper finished with 14 points and Fulkerson had 11.

While the Lady Cougars never led in the game, the contest was close throughout the first two periods. The score was tied three times in the opening period before it ended with the Lady Eagles (15-7) clinging to a 16-14 advantage.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Fulkerson at the 4:24 mark of the second period gave Ohio County its largest lead to that point, six points at 23-17, but Grayson County kept hanging tough. A 3-pointer from Stacy Downs brought the Lady Cougars to within a point of the lead, 25-24 at the 2:21 mark, but they could not manage to take a lead. The Lady Eagles outscored Grayson County 6-2 over the final minutes to take a 31-26 edge at the half.

From then on, it was all Ohio County. A 13-3 run opening the third period saw the lead balloon to 15 points, 44-29 at the 4:06 mark. The Lady Eagles stretched that lead to 18 points, 55-37 as the final period began. After scoring the last basket of the third period, Ohio scored the first eight points of the fourth and little doubt remained about the outcome of the game.

Alana Higdon led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 10 points, while Brittany Bird had nine. Lee Ann Wood added eight and Downs finished with five. Amanda Alvey, Tiffany Clemons, Savannah King, Cindy Langley and Tiffany Canter all finished with two points, and Molly Beeler and Laura Downs had one apiece to complete the Lady Cougar scoring.
