I recently went to a Toys For Tots charity fundraising ball in Louisville, Kentucky. Tickets had to be purchased ahead of time.

When you arrived, at an elite country club in downtown Louisville, two marines greeted you.

Each person who came to the ball had to bring a toy or they were not allowed to go in. People brought plastic big-wheel trikes, large stuffed animals, monster trucks, and much more.

The elite of Louisville was in attendance for the annual event. You could see anyone from high-powered attorneys to Ryder Cup organizers at the Toys For Tots Ball.

It was a black tie event. That meant you had to come dressed in fancy attire. The men were all dressed in tuxedos, and the women came in beautiful gowns.

Upon entering the building there was also a silent auction taking place. Various items were up for bid; a Ryder Cup framed print, a basket filled with delicious treats, NASCAR memorabilia, and Starbucks coffee.

The third floor is where the actual event was being held.

When you first walked in you saw a band playing in a grand ballroom. People of all ages were out on the dance floor having a fabulous time.

Next to the ballroom was an area where you could purchase drinks (non-alcoholic or alcoholic), and the proceeds went to the Toys For Tots of Louisville.

The country club staff was adorned in fancy outfits taking care of people’s every need. After leaving that room you traveled down a long corridor.

To your right there were several more rooms you could go in and visit with people.

The last room had food set out for people to enjoy while they mingled with each other.

I saw Marilyn Monroe (the girl looked just like her) in the back room. She was sitting beside a window, and looked like she was getting ready to do a photo shoot.

We thought she was a statue at first, because she was just sitting there, and was not moving.

Ross (this guy could be his twin), from the popular television series Friends, was at the ball trying to find his Racheal.

Photographers from major Louisville social magazines were taking pictures everywhere you looked. Apparently it is a big thing to be photographed by one of them.

The way I understand it, that is how you advance your social status in Louisville.

Knowing the right people is everything when living in a big city. If you know the right people, the possibilities are endless in how successful you can become.

What surprised me was how nice everyone was. They really made you feel welcome, and I was a nobody.

I teased my boss at the News-Gazette, that next week, that I should have worn my press pass, and taken pictures for our paper.

Just think of it, how many people really ever get the chance to attend a black-tie event at a ritzy-country club.

Talk about putting our little paper on the map. I told some people at the ball what I did for a living. They seemed intrigued, but had no clue what the Grayson County News-Gazette was.

About halfway through the night I gave up on trying to explain to people what it was, and where it was located.

Lets get back to the night’s festivities. The night progressed and people were spending a lot of money at the event.

I could not even imagine how much money was raised for Toys For Tots.

Here is the funny part about the entire night. Remember I said everyone was wearing expensive dresses and suits.

Guess what the waiters bring out for the audience to eat later that night, White Castle burgers. I could not stop laughing.

When the entire experience came to a close I was just in awe. It was like a dream to me to be part of such a special night.

When you live in a small town you just do not get these chances very often. The biggest excitement we have in Grayson County is going out to eat, or going to Walmart.

Plus what girl in her right mind does not want to dress up, and act like a princess for just one night.

Did I forget to mention, some of our group got their picture taken for one of the magazines. How awesome is that. We are forever engraved online with key socialites from the Louisville Metro area.

Not too bad for a small-town girl from Caneyville.
