A mother of one got the best birthday present she could ever imagine over the weekend. Rayna Joell was born on January 1, claiming her as Grayson County’s Baby New Year for 2011.

Kristian Rye gave birth to Rayna Joell Rye on January 1 at 9:15 a.m. at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in Leitchfield. The baby weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz., and was 13 inches long.

Dr. Sam Buck delivered the infant.

Rayna’s arrival was a surprise to the family, because her actual due date was the first week in January.

Rayna’s big brother Chase, who is 10 years old, was very anxious to meet his little sister for the first time.

“Our baby was three or four days early,” Kristian expressed. “I could not have asked for a better birthday present.”

As with every special occasion comes an abundance of gifts. Those items are collected from local businesses and organizations, and then presented to the baby’s mother. Twin Lakes Director of Planning and Marketing Bill Oldham explained in further detail about the Baby New Year service.

“We have had community partners supporting the first delivery of the year for the last several years,” Oldham said. “Almost all of this year’s sponsors have contributed in the past, most of them several times.”

This year’s contributors were Karat Kase, Stevenson’s Paint Store, Big O Tires, Erikson Chiropractic, Sew Bee Quilt Guild (Clarkson), Creta Merideth and Wilson & Muir Bank and Trust.
