Grayson County’s varsity boys soccer team had to settle for a runner-up finish in the 11th District Tournament as the Meade County Green Wave washed them away 9-2 in the championship game last Wednesday at the Cougar Soccer Field.
The Cougars reached the final by the skin of their teeth after having to go to double-overtime on Tuesday to defeat the Butler County Bears 3-2. That game had been scheduled to be played on Monday, but was moved back because of thunderstorms.
Grayson County was never really in this game as the Green Wave got two quick goals in the sixth and seventh minutes, then led 4-1 at the half. They increased their lead to 6-1 in the second half before the Cougars put another shot in the net in the net in the 64th minute. The Waves then added three more goals before the final horn sounded
Meade’s Ethan Fackler scored in the sixth minute, firing a shot from the left wing and putting it past Cougar goalie Jack Davis to make it 1-0. Less than a minute later, Luis Bravo brought the ball down on the right side and fired one into the Cougar net to make it 2-0.
The Cougar defense stiffened after that and was able to keep a rein on the Waves until the 23rd minute, when Jacob Bewley sent an absolute rocket on goal which Davis had no chance to stop, and the Waves led 3-0. Both Fackler and Bewley were named to the 11th District All-Tournament Team.
The Waves worked some magic in the 27th minute for their fourth goal. Working the ball out of the Meade end, Tyler Matti sent a beautiful pass over the heads of the Cougar defenders which Bravo was able to run down. He took it toward the goal as Davis came out to cut down the angle. Bravo was able to slip the ball past Davis to make it 4-0.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute when Conner Schultz brought the ball up the right side and sent a bullet at the Green Wave goal. Keeper Spencer Jenks dove to deflect the ball away from the goal, but it went right to Carson Zurmehley, who directed it into the goal to make it 4-1.
The Green Wave continued to put pressure on Davis in goal at the start of the second half and narrowly missed another goal in the 43rd minute. Davis was just able to get a hand on a header in front of the open goal and deflected the ball away.
Fackler scored his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute to make it 5-1..
The Cougars’ fortunes took a heavy blow in the 57th minute when senior wing Dylan Logsdon received a red card and had to leave the game, forcing the Cougars to play shot-handed the rest of the way. Logsdon will be ineligible for the Cougars’ opening-round game in the regional tournament
A Goal by Kyle Young in the 62nd minute increased the Meade lead to 6-1, but Schultz scored off a left-footed shot in the 64th minute to keep the Cougar hopes alive, trailing 6-2.
But that would be all for Grayson County. Dylan Childress scored for Meade in the 68th minute, then scored again less than a minute later to make it 8-1. Young scored the final goal of the night with less than five minutes remaining off a nice pass from Bewley.
Following the game the 11th District All-Tournament Team was named. Meade’s Fackler and Bewley were joined by Gabe Riggs. Schultz and Amos Goodman were named from Grayson County, with Butler County’s Dylan Inglis tabbed as the final member.
