A one-vehicle wreck on Brandenburg Road on Saturday morning sent a Leitchfield woman to University of Louisville Hospital with incapacitating injuries, according to Sheriff Rick Clemons.

The accident report states that Kendra L. Chino, 31, of Green Meadow Road in Leitchfield, was travelling north approximately one-half mile north of the city of Leitchfield when the 2006 General Motors CK 1500 Crew Cab pick-up truck she was driving dropped off of the outside shoulder of the roadway.

Chino told officers that the vehicle became difficult to steer at that point, and she lost control as the truck crossed over onto the opposite side of the roadway before striking a ditch and overturning.

Chino, who suffered incapacitating hand and arm injuries, was treated at the scene by Grayson County EMS, and was transported by emergency helicopter to U of L Hospital.

Chino was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and Clemons said “this was truly an incident where seatbelts saved lives.”

Leitchfield’s American Legion Post 81 held its annual Flag Day Ceremony on Friday, June 14.

More than 600 unserviceable American flags were placed in the Legion’s fire pit to be burned as members of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Cub Scouts, Venturers, and various other community members paid homage.

According to new Post Commander Shane Thomason, Flag Day marks the one time per year when it is appropriate to dispose of an American flag, and the flag must meet a certain criteria.

In order for an American flag to be deemed unserviceable, and therefore suitable to be burned, a flag must first be presented to the Legion for inspection.

If a flag is discolored, tattered, or has been disfigured in some other fashion, it may be deemed unserviceable and will be held by the Legion until Flag Day, on which day it will be respectfully burned.

Thomason said numerous people from the community gave the Legion their unserviceable flags to be disposed of appropriately.

Prior to the Ceremony, the flags are piled in the Legion’s fire pit and doused with kerosene.

During the Ceremony, the Legion’s acting Sergeant at Arms presents an unserviceable flag to be inspected by the Post’s Vice Commander and Commander.

After the Vice-Commander and Commander have both inspected the flag and deem it unserviceable, they advise the Sergeant at Arms that the flag must be burned.

The Sergeant at Arms then lights a torch and sets the piled flags aflame.

Nolin Summer Splash on June 22
Jun 19, 2013 | 55 views | 0 0 comments | 6 6 recommendations | email to a friend | print

Summer Splash is back at the Nolin Lake State Park on June 22nd, featuring a variety of activities and entertainment for families. The event kicks off with music on the shoreline at 3 p.m., along with free inflatables for children, and a variety of food vendors. Nine Horse Johnson, a Bowling Green rock band, is the featured act for the Houseboat Hop, which will be from 7-9 p.m. Visitors can listen from the shoreline or from their boats as Nine Horse Johnson plays from the roof of a houseboat in the lake in front of the beach at the State Park. Following Nine Horse Johnson’s performance, visitors can enjoy an incredible fireworks show put on by Nite Lites.
Because of the number of boats which will be anchored in the lake by the state park, the lake around the state park will be zoned as “No Wake” on the afternoon and evening of June 22nd. In addition, the Nolin Lake State Park boat ramp will be closed on June 22nd for this event. Boaters should plan to launch from the Van Meter (Site 1) boat ramp at the dam or the Moutardier boat ramp.
“We’re excited about another great event organized by the Friends of Nolin Lake,” said Deryck Rodgers, Park Ranger with the Corps of Engineers at Nolin. “We had a big crowd at last year’s Summer Splash. Everyone enjoyed the music, the free inflatables, the food, and especially the free fireworks show.”
Summer Splash is organized by the Friends of Nolin Lake and is sponsored by The Pointe at Nolin. The Houseboat Hop is sponsored by Moutardier Marina.
