Caneyville receives $38,000 matching grant
by Rebecca Morris
Reporter

Work could wrap up by the end of November on work to upgrade Caneyville’s wastewater treatment plant.

During a rescheduled meeting earlier this month, city commissioners received an update on the project from engineer Vernon Shanklin, whose firm, Kenviron, designed it.

The project includes replacing the 30-plus year old plant’s mechanical equipment, replacing the aeration devices and adding screening to help remove some floating debris from the oxidation ditches.

Shanklin told commissioners he thinks the project will be basically finished in about another week. He noted the new aerator tripped a breaker during its first day of use and will have to be checked out by an electrician.

Temporary aeration equipment is in place, and will remain there until everything is working properly, commissioners were told.

In other action, commissioners:

* Approved buying fencing for the second new ball field from Flener Brothers, Inc.

* Approved providing refreshments for the city’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.

* Learned the city has received a $38,000 Recreational Trail Grant, which will be used to help pay for a walking track and lighting at the new ball fields. The city had applied for the 50 percent matching grant earlier in the year.

A federal program administered through the U.S. Department of Transportation, RTP grants may be used to provide assistance for acquisition of easements; development and/or maintenance of recreational trails; and trailhead facilities for both motorized and non-motorized use. Examples of trail uses include hiking, cycling, inline skating, equestrian use, off-road motorcycling and all-terrain vehicle riding.

In all, Kentucky received $1.13 million in RTP funding, to be divided among 21 communities. Caneyville was the only Grayson County community receiving funding.

* Learned Helen Cockriel, with Modern Woodmen, obtained a $500 matching grant for the Caneyville Fire Department. Commissioners expressed their appreciation to both Mrs. Cockriel and Modern Woodmen.
