Three local businesses—Madison Square Boutique, For Myself Florist, and Vintage Gifts—held the successful grand opening of their new jointly-owned location on February 1.
Vintage Gifts owner Denise Embry said after she retired from the Parent Child Center, she was looking for a creative outlet and asked Kim Higdon (owner of For Myself Florist) if she could move a small shop into Higdon’s store at 202 West White Oak Street.
Embry said shortly after she contacted Higdon, Anne Gonzales (owner of Madison Square Boutique) joined in.
“It was easy,” Embry said of the project. “Everything just fell into place.”
As a joint venture between Gonzales, Higdon, and Embry, the shop was remodeled and now houses the three’s respective businesses.
Gonzales said that, despite having some trouble cutting the ribbon at the store’s opening, the store was filled “wall-to-wall with customers.” And since then, the store has become more and more popular, especially among local women, she said.
“[Our store] is where most of the women of Leitchfield come in and hang out,” Gonzales said. “We offer free coffee and tea, even if they don’t buy anything.”
A native of New York, Gonzales said Madison Square Boutique’s jewelry, purses, and clothing are inspired by New York fashion.
Located in the rear of the shop, Vintage Gifts sells antiques, furniture, pottery, fabrics and linens, décor, and features work by local artisans, including pottery-makers and woodworkers.
Embry said, “I try to make everything affordable and different. I’m always looking online and going different places to find new things.”
And since it was first established six years ago, Higdon’s For Myself Florist has provided custom floral arrangements for all occasions, including weddings, birthdays, and funerals.
Gonzales said she has been pleased with how quickly the community has grown fond of her store. “I set up a Facebook page for Madison Square Boutique and had 80 hits in the first 20 minutes it was up,” she said.
With the grand opening behind them, Gonzales, Embry, and Higdon said they are looking toward Valentine’s Day.
Higdon said, “We have almost every conceivable gift, and if we don’t have [what you’re looking for], we can order it.”
The shop’s hours are 8:30-5 PM on Monday through Friday and 9-3 on Saturday; however Gonzales said she is available for special appointments should customers request a custom item.
Gonzales encourages prospective customers to visit the Madison Square Boutique and Vintage Gifts Facebook pages for more information on the stores’ products.
