Short Creek resident Lisa Robinson recently celebrated the grand opening of her new pet-grooming salon, Dog Works, on Tuesday, April 16.

Robinson said she has wanted to open her own grooming business ever since she started grooming pets eight years ago, having previously worked for Gayle’s Grooming of Harned and Shaggy Dog (both the Elizabethtown and Leitchfield locations).

Originally from Breckinridge County, Robinson said she moved to Short Creek two years ago and started planning the opening of Dog Works about two months ago, as a “nice, quiet business,” away from the”chaotic” atmosphere of her previous jobs.

With the help of her family and friends, Robinson said she was able to bring her dream to fruition, along with her business partner, Kim England, who bathes the pets.

Dog Works’ first week open for business has been a successful one, said Robinson, who on the day of her interview for this article said she had groomed four pets.

“We’ve done quite a few [pets] this week,”she said. “I’ve been tickled. Everybody has been stopping in to see what’s going on.”

Robinson said she grooms dogs of all sizes and breeds, and a groom typically takes two hours. Grooms include a hair cut, a bath, a once-over to “make sure to get a clean cut,” nail trimming, and nail filing, she said.

Robinson said she usually requests pet owners drop off their pets off in her salon and come back for the pets when the grooming is finished.

“When dogs are with their owner, they act like a little kid,” Robinson said. “When the owner leaves, the dog calms down a lot. It makes a world of difference.”

Robinson said grooming for a small dog costs $30, a medium dog costs $35-40, and the price of grooming for a large dog varies depending on breed. Large dogs such as German Shepherds with thick hair that takes longer to dry may cost more because they require more time to groom, she said.

Robinson said, in addition to dogs, she grooms cats and other pets, as well.

“We can do anything other than a horse,” she said. “Whatever will fit in a bath tub.”

In terms of where she wants her business to go, Robinson said she’d like to keep things modest.

“I would like to maintain a small business,” she said. “I’m not as interested in quantity as I am quality.”

Dog Works is located at 108 West Main Street in Leitchfield. Robinson said walk-ins are welcome, but customers may also schedule appointments by phone via the shop’s number at 270-617-3239.

It is finally time for the greatly-anticipated Second Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at Rough River Lake.

The event, which features a flotilla of creatively decorated homemade boats, will kick off on Saturday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at the North Fork Campground Beach.

Last year’s event was the first of its kind locally and drew a crowd of approximately 200 spectators, according to Adam VanZant, with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

VanZant said that those wishing to view this year’s race may watch from the shore or from boats.

Organizers with the Corps and Friends of Rough River Lake expect the number of boats entered to expand this year from last year’s approximately nine entrants.

Those wishing to enter a boat into the competition can sign up ahead of time by contacting the US Army Corps of Engineers at 270-257-2061 or on the day of the event between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and can expect to be judged in three different categories: overall best decorated, most entertaining group, and Titanic (most likely to sink).

First place trophies will also be awarded in the following categories: school, civic or scout group; parent and child; ages 16-49; and age 50 and over.

All participating boats must be built entirely from cardboard, and the cardboard may not be bonded to any other material. Only the joints and seams may be taped or glued.

Boats may not exceed 16 feet in length, and may be paddled with oars but no motors of flippers are allowed. Lifejackets will be required for anyone riding in a cardboard boat.

All boats will be inspected prior to racing to ensure that they comply with the rules. For additional information on rules and regulations, feel free to call the Corps at the number listed above.

Registration costs $15 per boat prior to Thursday, June 20, and $25 per boat after that date.

In addition to Saturday’s regatta, VanZant said that Rough River Lake is always hosting something fun for visitors. Some other upcoming events include the Rumble Over Rough fireworks show on Saturday, July 6 and the third annual “Dam” Triathlon on Saturday, August 10.
