Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center (TLRMC) will be holding its second annual “Community Shred It Day” on Saturday, April 20.
TLRMC will be co-sponsoring the event with Shred-It, a Louisville-based company of document-shredding specialists who will assist community residents in safely disposing of sensitive documents to better protect themselves from identity theft, according to a press release from TLRMC.
Shred-It will provide a commercial shredding truck free of charge from 8 a.m. until noon on April 20, and community residents may bring in personal documents to be boxed up and shredded on site, according to Pam Gonterman, Director of Health Information and Health Information Accountability and Portability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Officer at TLRMC.
Appropriate items include credit card and financial statements, old tax forms, pre-approved credit card offers, checks, documents with personal identification numbers, and prescription bottle labels, according to the press release.
Gonterman said Shred-It has provided monthly pick-up and on-site shredding of records for TLRMC for the past two years, and when she learned that Shred-It had sponsored similar Shred It Day events with other organizations, she approached the group about hosting one with TLRMC.
Participants are asked to donate $2 in cash for every box of material to be shredded, and 100 % of the proceeds raised will go toward benefitting Relay for Life and Wings on a Prayer, Gonterman said.
Gonterman said the first annual 2012 Community Shred-It Day raised about $180, and she hopes the event will become on-going and grow more successful each year.
The event will be held in front of the Cave-Bland medical building on TLRMC’s campus, the press release read.
