Sheriff Rick Clemons received a pleasant surprise in the form of a letter from the Federal Bureau of Investigation last week.
The letter commended Clemons, along with Deputies Buck Meredith and Adam Cottrell for their contributions to the November 2 arrest of Todd Berkley, a serial bank robber who had been dubbed the “Elmer Fudd Bandit.”
“Without your Department’s critical assistance,” the FBI said, “Berkley would not be in custody nor would the valuable evidence from his six bank robberies have been recovered.”
Following a string of Chicago-area bank heists and a bulletin from the Louisville Metro Police Department following a West Beuchel-area robbery, the local Sheriff’s Department located Berkley through the aid of a Clarkson-area tipster.
Berkley was taken into custody and a “significant amount of heroin was seized,” which the FBI found to have been purchased in Illinois and transported by Berkley into Kentucky.
After the arrest, GCSD returned to the residence where Berkley had been apprehended and recovered a cell phone and clothing he had worn during the Chicago robberies.
Berkley subsequently confessed to all six suspected thefts in two states.
The letter also explained that in addition, the quick work of the officers helped to avoid further robberies which Berkley had planned to carry out in Grayson County.
“The result of this case shows what happens when law enforcement partners on all levels work together,” the letter said, “a violent crime career offender is removed from the streets.”
