The Leitchfield Police Department (LPD) is currently investigating vandalism that occurred on Thursday, May 16 at the as-yet-unopened Firefighter Park Pavilion on Brandenburg Road in Leitchfield.

The perpetrator(s) damaged the Pavilion’s new bathroom facility by marking on the brick walls of the structure causing damage, according to a press release from the LPD.

Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson said the recent vandalism will not delay the Pavilion’s grand opening, which is set to take place on Monday, May 20 at 5 p.m.

This incident marks the second time the facility has been vandalized since its construction began last fall. In November 2012, two adults and two juveniles were charged with Criminal Mischief when they carved names into the freshly poured concrete, which caused approximately $2,500 in damage, according to the press release.

A reward of up to $1,000 is currently being offered for information that results in the conviction of the person(s) responsible for the current vandalism of the Firefighter Park’s Pavilion, the release read.

Also, at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Monday, May 13, the Leitchfield Fire Department (LFD) responded to a vehicle fire on Sunrise Drive.

After extinguishing the flame, the LFD determined that the vehicle had been purposely set on fire, according to a press release from the LPD.

The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus owned by Jordan Hutchinson, received moderate damage as a result of the fire, according to the release.

The incident is also currently under investigation by the LPD.

Anyone with information about either of these crimes is encouraged to contact the LPD at 270-259-3850.

The LPD also recently charged a 15-year-old juvenile from Neosho County, Kansas in connection with a bomb threat that was called in to the Leitchfield Wal-Mart.

According to the LPD’s press release, on Sunday, March 3, 2013, Wal-Mart received a call advising that a bomb had been placed in the store, causing an evacuation and search before the business could be re-opened.

The juvenile is facing the charge of Aggravated Criminal Threat - a security level 5 person felony - the penalty for which is from a minimun of 31 months to a maximum of 136 months in prison; a fine of up to $300,000; and a post-release supervision term of 24 months, according to the release.

The juvenile was charged in the state of origin of the offense, the release read.

The LPD was assisted in this investigation by the Neosho County Sheriff’s Department and the Erie Police Department in Kansas.
