Caneyville’s issues with flooding may soon be a thing of the past.

John Likins, a resident of Caneyville, announced that he had obtained all the necessary permits to remove obstructing debris, such as trees, gravel, and tires, from 3.9 miles of Caney Creek at the regularly scheduled April 8 Caneyville City Commission meeting.

Likins told the Commission he had met with officials in Frankfort and the area surrounding Caney Creek to request support for the project, many of whom have readily supported the debris removal, he said.

Caneyville Mayor James Embry said because of the debris in the creek, water has often become backed up and flooded the Caneyville ball fields.

While no equipment will be allowed in the water, Likins said the clearing equipment may be set on the banks of Caney Creek, and the arms of the equipment can clear the debris with little difficulty.

Likins reported to the Commission that the Grayson County Fiscal Court will be accepting bids until April 19 for the work. Likins told the Commission that all he requires to start the work is funding and asked for the City’s financial support.

Mayor Embry said he and the Commission have tried numerous times to make progress with the Caney Creek project and expressed his appreciation for Likins’ interest and work put into the project.

Mayor Embry said he and the Commission would take Likins’ request under consideration.

In other business:

Caneyville Supervisor of Water and Wastewater Avery Flener reported to the Commission he had received a quote that stated $1,500 would be required to pay for the grit chamber corrections at the Caneyville wastewater plant.

Flener told the Commission that Vern Shanklin, of Kenvirons Engineering—the company who supplied the plans for the wastewater plant’s recent updates—was dissatisified with the quote.

The Commission agreed that the grit chamber issue was Kenvirons’ responsibility to remedy.

Flener also announced that all but two of the lights and poles in the new Caneyville ball fields have been placed. Flener said a rock bit will be needed to break through rock in the ground to place the remaining poles.

In addition, Mayor Embry said he will deliver two loads of dirt to help level the ground on the ball fields.

Plumbing plans for the concession stand at the ball park have been submitted to the state and are planned to be available for pick up on April 12, the Commission announced.

Flener also reported that holes are being dug for fencing in the second field, and the sewer line for the park should be completed within the week.

Caneyville City Clerk and Treasurer Brenda Brown gave the second reading of the cable franchise ordinance, and the Commission motioned to adopt the ordinance. Brown said the ordinance is non-exclusive, and the City will advertise for proposals. Bids will be opened on May 13, Brown said.

Brown recommended utilizing an off-site internet storage system to back-up the City’s files. Brown said Russell Mayes, of Lincoln Trail Area Development, had presented her with a quote for $8.33 per month for up to 500 GB of storage from Acronis. The Commission was in favor of purchasing the service, due to its low price compared to other internet storage sites.

The Commission voted to install two toddler swings at the playground by the old Caneyville school.

The Caneyville Alumni Banquet will be held at the old Caneyville school on Saturday, April 20th.
