Teen hid in closet while Thief ransacked home
by Brittany Wise

A Caneyville teen hid in a closet inside her home to avoid being discovered by thieves who had broken into the house last Friday morning, according to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Chief Deputy Tony Willen, the department is “aggressively investigating the incident.”

Willen said that a man pried open the side door to the teen’s home on Blue Creek Road in Caneyville and entered the residence while a second man waited in a dark green car in the driveway.

The 13-year-old female hid herself in a closet and texted her mother, Danisa Edens, for help. Edens then contacted her mother, Joanne Geary, who was at home across the street from the house where the girl was hiding.

Geary quickly walked to the girl’s home and asked the man in the driveway - who is described as being dark complected with short dark hair and an earring in his left ear - why he was there. The man reportedly told Geary that he was there to purchase something.

At that point, Geary entered the residence and encountered a thin, red-haired man in his mid to late twenties. The man was holding a number of items belonging to the homeowners, and told Geary not to call the police.

When Geary expressed that she did intend to call the police, the man threw the items, which included a laptop, at her, hitting her in the face.

The man fled and Geary attempted briefly to detain him, according to Willen. Once outside of the home, the man ran to catch the green car, which was pulling out of the driveway. He chased the car into the roadway where he was able to get inside. Both men escaped.

Geary sustained minor injuries in the altercation, but her grand-daughter went undetected by the intruder.

Willen expressed that the Sheriff’s Department is looking at suspects in the case.

Anyone with further information regarding the incident or the perpetrators is encouraged to contact law enforcement by calling 259-3024 or by calling the anonymous tip line at 270-200-2222.
