Work on upgrading Caneyville’s wastewater treatment plant has slipped behind schedule, the city commision learned this week.
On Monday, Oct. 15, the commission received an update on the project from engineer Vernon Shanklin, whose firm, Kenviron, designed it.
The project includes replacing the 30-plus year old plant’s mechanical equipment, replacing the aeration devices and adding screening to help remove some floating debris from the oxidation ditches.
Pouring concrete started in mid-September, and was expected to be the main focus during the first three weeks of work. The city had hoped to test the integrity of that concrete at four pours, but that will now be expanded to six pours.
Commissioners expressed some concerns about the contractor, Scott & Ritter, not working earlier this month during a stretch of good weather. Shanklin said contractor’s representative David Bales had said he thought there wasn’t enough room at the site for all the workers and subcontractors. They estimate the work is now about two weeks behind schedule.
In other action commissioners:
* Approved paying $55,000 for the old Caneyville School and the surrounding 10 acres, and authorized the mayor to sign the deed for the property. The city is buying the school from the Grayson County Board of Education.
The 1928 building served as a high school until 1974, and as an elementary school until the early 2000s.
* Set trick-or-treating hours for 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
* Thanked Jeremiah Parrigan for installing a light on the exterior of the fire station.
