Volunteers needed for Operation Preparation
by Brittany Wise

Volunteers will get the opportunity to help area 8th- and 10th-graders to become better prepared for their future careers next month as part of the state’s Unbridled Learning: College/Career Readiness for All initiative.

Due to an overwhelmingly high number of students per counselors in schools across the state, the Kentucky Department of Education implemented this required program, during which trained volunteer advisers will conduct short sessions to discuss the students’ career aspirations, required education, training and workforce skills, whether they are on target to meet those goals, and whether they are taking the courses recommended to prepare them for a successful future.

Volunteers will complete an online training session in order to better understand how to help students with their Individual Learning Plans.

The program has been dubbed ‘Operation Preparation,’ and a recent press release said that it “is designed to provide both information and inspiration for the student to achieve college/career-readiness.”

Each session is estimated to last only about 20-minutes, but has the potential to lay the groundwork for a child’s future success in the workforce.

The Kentucky Department of Education’s website noted in regards to Operation Preparation that “If Kentucky is to remain economically viable and globally competitive, we need to be sure every one of our students and our workforce is prepared and ready to meet the demands of the 21st-century. Operation Preparation is your opportunity to help.”

Area businesses are also encouraged to participate as either a partner in planning and implementation, as a source for community advisers or both.

An appeal to potential businesses and community partners from the Department of Education explained, “College and Career Readiness is not just an issue for students and schools. It has an impact on communities being able to attract new jobs and businesses being able to hire qualified employees. Your support of the College and Career Readiness Plan is vital to its success and the success of the local economy.”

Operation Preparation will be hosted at Grayson County Middle School on March 18, 19 and 20 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The Grayson County High School sessions will be conducted on March 13 beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The local contact person for the program is Grayson County Community Education Director Angela Jones. Prospective volunteers or business and community groups interested in being involved may contact Jones via email at angie.jones@grayson.kyschools.us for additional information. They may also visit http://education.ky.gov/educational/CCadv/op/Pages/default.aspx to learn more about the program.
