With the 2012 Grayson County Fair now in full swing, area residents are encouraged to stop in for a family-friendly good time, but should also be aware of some basic precautions that fairgoers and those driving through the area should follow, according to Leitchfield Police Detective Kevin “Speedy” Smith.

Smith explained that due to a notable increase in pedestrian traffic in the area of the fairgrounds, drivers should exercise particular caution.

“A lot of young people, children and families with children” will be out, Smith said, and those in automobiles should be mindful of that.

Signs along that stretch of Brandenburg Road also bring drivers’ attention to the fact that there may be slight delays in traffic and could potentially be traffic stopped near the entrance gates.

“Basically,” Smith said, “allow yourself plenty of time.”

Locals should also bear in mind that this year the fair will be open on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m., so the change in traffic flow will likely last until late Sunday night.

Another precaution Smith wanted to remind those attending the fair of is keeping valuables safe while at the fairgrounds.

“Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle,” he stressed, “if you must, make sure they’re in the trunk and make sure you lock your vehicle.”

Smith said that this is not just a fair-related caution, but that “we’ve seen an increase in that lately; thefts from unlocked vehicles. We’d like to urge everybody to make sure your vehicle is locked and secure.”

In addition to Smith’s suggestions, those looking to have fun at the county fair should be careful to check the weather forecast, which currently shows the potential for rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the most significant chance of thunderstorms being during the day on Saturday.

Wearing weather-appropriate clothing and shoes or bringing along a rain jacket or umbrella could mean the difference between having a blast or having soggy regrets.

High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80’s to low 90’s and lows should range from the low 60’s to low 70’s.

Fairgoers should also remember to wear or bring along sunscreen if they intend to spend long periods enjoying the fair.
