Shootings leave 1 dead, 2 injured; local man charged with murder
by Brittany Wise

Two shooting incidents in the past week have left one woman dead and two men injured. A local man has been charged with murder.

The most recent incident occurred at approximately 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, according to a report from Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Norman Chaffins.

Officers from KSP and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at 48 Tara Lane in Clarkson, where an argument between 59-year-old Laura L. Ford and 85-year-old Alva Cutris Gussler turned deadly.

According to Chaffins, Gussler produced a gun and shot Ford in the chest. She was transported to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at just after 9 p.m.

Gussler went on to shoot a second victim, his son, 48-year-old Michael Gussler, in the arm. Michael Gussler was taken to TLRMC, where he was treated for the non-life threatening injury.

Alva Gussler was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and assault in the first degree, according to a representative with the Grayson County Detention Center. He is currently being lodged in the GCDC where he will await trial and sentencing. Investigation is ongoing by KSP.

Both of the victims resided at the Tara Lane address with the shooter.

In a separate incident on Monday night, December 31, 31-year-old James Decker was left fighting for his life after being shot once in the abdomen.

According to Sheriff Rick Clemons, the GCSO was dispatched to 8785 Peonia Road at just after 8:30 p.m. when an altercation between two males brought 62-year-old Bill Mudd to draw a gun and shoot Decker.

The victim was transported to TLRMC, where he was taken by helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital. He is considered to be in critical condition.

The incident occurred at the residence of Tom and Jo Lashley, where multiple witnesses saw the incident after Decker, a neighbor of the Mudds, arrived at the residence.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing by GCSO, and witnesses are being interviewed, though no arrests have been made at this time.

Clemons commented that of the 13,004 calls his department responded to in 2012, this was both one of the last and one of the worst.
