Two cars were severely damaged by pieces of a fallen electric pole after it was struck by a drunk driver last Thursday evening.

The incident occurred on Shrewsbury Road, approximately one mile south of the city of Leitchfield. E-911 received a call at just before 7:30 p.m. and quickly dispatched Grayson County EMS and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office to the scene.

According to the report filed with GCSO, the light pole, which belonged to WRECC, broke after being struck by a 2002 Kia Sportage being driven by 18-year-old Aaron Reams, of Sadler Road in Leitchfield.

Reams’ vehicle was found in a field behind the broken pole, and the driver told the responding officer that his vehicle had spun in the field before coming to a rest.

As a large piece of the electric pole fell, it struck the hood of a 2003 Mazda Familiar being driven by Ernestina Kidd. The hood was ripped from Kidd’s vehicle, which was then entangled in live electric wires. Kidd told officers that there were a “lot of sparks” on the roof of her vehicle.

Quickly after Kidd’s Mazda was stopped by the pole and lines, a third vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Jamie Childress, became involved in the incident. Childress’ car struck a large portion of the pole which was leaning into the south-bound lane of Shrewsbury Road, causing significant damage to the windshield and roof.

Reams was uninjured in the accident, but was asked to undergo a field sobriety test and an alcohol blood test. He was arrested hours later for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and is currently lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Kidd, 54, of Liberty Church Road in Leitchfield, suffered possible injuries to the hands and arms and was treated at the scene.

Childress, 36, of Nash Lane in Leitchfield, was uninjured.
