A crafty burglar robbed Nolin General Store early Monday morning, walking away with two large totes of cigarettes, according to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident, which occurred at just before 2 a.m. on September 24, is one in an increasingly popular string of cigarette-only thefts in Grayson and the surrounding counties, according to Detective Jeff Kelsey, with the GCSD.
Deputy Chris Bates was dispatched to the Peonia Road location at about 1:40 a.m. when an alarm sounded, and he arrived quickly at the location, spotlighting the area and performing a check at the General Store as well as the bait and tackle shop nearby.
Bates reported that both locations were intact and cleared the scene by 2:07 a.m., according to Kelsey.
After Bates left the location, however, video surveillance shows that a lone, white male approximately six feet tall and between 180 and 200 pounds, entered the building and loaded two large, darkly-colored totes with cigarettes.
Kelsey said that it appears the man threw a brick through a glass emergency door in order to reach in and open it from the inside.
It is also believed that the man likely set off the original alarm by jarring the door of the building, and briefly left the scene until Bates had cleared the location and left.
The video shows that the burglar did not attempt to take anything from the store other than cigarettes, and “did not touch the cash register,” according to Kelsey.
Vehicles can be seen travelling along the road in front of the building at the time the thief would have been there, and Kelsey encourages anyone who may have seen someone in the area, particularly someone carrying totes, to contact him at the Sheriff’s Department at 259-3024.
