A group of 4-H youths discovered a methamphetamine lab while volunteering to help clean up a lakeshore area on Saturday morning, according to Detective Jeff Kelsey with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the children in the group discovered the plastic 20 ounce bottle with tubing coming out of it and notified an adult with the group, Angelia Burden, of Leitchfield.

Burden placed the lab inside of two plastic garbage bags and transported it from the shore of Nolin Lake on the Hart County side to the Wax Marina, according to the report filed by the responding officer, Deputy Bryan Hammons.

The bottle, which appeared white inside and still contained some methamphetamine manufacturing chemicals, was later transported to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.

Kelsey said, “We want to get the word out there that if you see something like this, call the State Police or call us to come to the scene.”

He stressed that while any person finding a similar, suspicious object should notify officers immediately, it is a good idea to leave the object alone and let officers handle it once they arrive in order to avoid contamination and to allow officers to properly search the scene for other evidence and potentially for other labs.

“I’d hate for somebody to get hurt trying to help,” Kelsey said.

- A local traffic stop on Highway 62 led to the arrest of Leitchfield resident Phildon D. Wooden, of West Main Street.

Wooden, 31, was pulled over for speeding when the officer at the scene, Detective Jeff Kelsey, noticed that there was a Hardin County warrant for Wooden’s arrest.

Wooden was placed in custody on Tuesday, September 11 at approximately 2:45 p.m.

- An officer responded to East Market Street in Leitchfield on Thursday, September 13, where he found two men in a verbal dispute.

One of the men, 38-year-old Jemini Avery, of East Market Street, had a baseball bat in his hands with the intent to cause damage to a Ford Mustang parked at his residence.

The officer removed the bat and arrested Avery for disorderly conduct in the second degree.
