A Saturday afternoon argument turned brutally fatal for a Grayson County man on June 16, 2012. Christian Fernando Higdon, a 20-year-old Clarkson man, died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, according to a press release from Norman Chaffins, of the Kentucky State Police. Officials say that Higdon was bludgeoned with the blunt side of a hatchet, allegedly at the hands of 24-year-old Jamie Byron Columbus Wagers, of Hardin County. According to Chaffins, KSP Post 4 received a call at just after 2:30 p.m. EST regarding the assault on Higdon. A female caller told dispatchers that Wagers had struck another man in the head with a blunt object at 130 Magers Drive, in Elizabethtown, and was continuing to pursue him on foot. The altercation, according to sources, began inside the Magers Drive residence, where Higdon and Wagers reportedly began arguing. Wagers then purportedly told Higdon he should leave before retrieving the hatchet from another room. According to KSP, Wagers was seen running after Higdon up Magers Drive, with the hatchet in hand. Another resident of the Plantation Park subdivision, Judy Maggard, saw the two men running up the street toward her yard, and told WHAS 11 , “At first I thought they were just playing, running down the road playing, until the boy ran up into my yard and was covered with blood.” Authorities say that Higdon was conscious and able to speak at that point, telling Maggard his name and asking her to call 911 before collapsing on her lawn. Maggard went on to say, “You know, he knew he was dying. He said, ‘I’m dying.’” When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Higdon’s body in Maggard’s yard at 45 Magers Drive. The KSP press release stated that Higdon was found to have “a significant injury to the back of his head.” Higdon’s mother, Cindy Higdon, of Clarkson, had no comment when contacted by News-Gazette staff, but later told WLKY, “They say he died quick because they bashed through his brain.” Cindy Higdon went on to say, “He was a beautiful son, but we messed up as parents. We didn’t know what to do for him,” said Cindy Higdon. “What did I do? Did I let him die? We’re supposed to die before them.” Higdon was officially pronounced dead at the scene at 2:51 p.m. EST by the Hardin County Coroner. According to interviews given by family members, Higdon had struggled with drug use. His aunt, who preferred not to be named, said Monday, “He was a good boy, he just took a wrong path.” Based on information obtained in the preliminary investigation, KSP detectives placed Jamie Wagers under arrest and charged him with Higdon’s murder. Wagers was also charged with violating an Emergency Protective Order, or E.P.O., which required him to stay away from the address where the incident began. Wagers is being lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond and was arraigned on Monday, June 18 in Hardin County. He plead not guilty. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP and is headed by Detective Probes.
