The Volunteer Auxiliary at Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center (TLRMC) sponsored and hosted their Spring Book Fair and Bake Sale on Friday, March 29.
The bake sale and book fair, both of which were held in the hospital lobby, raised money to fund a $1,000 high school scholarship for a senior going into the medical science field and to purchase new equipment for the hospital, according to Volunteer Auxiliary President Fran Abell.
Abell said the Auxiliary, which currently has 35 members, hosts two bake sales a year—one to be held before Christmas, and the other to be held before Easter.
“We do really well,” Abell said. “Not only do people from the community come out, but employees [of the hospital] love it, too.”
Director of Planning and Marketing at TLRMC Bill Oldham said the Auxiliary bake sales typically raise $500 to $600, and the book fairs typically raise $250 to $300.
The Spring Book Fair marks the fourth collaboration between TLRMC and Books Are Fun (BAF), a company that partners with various companies (usually hospitals) to increase charitable donations through book fairs, according to Corporate Sales Representative for BAF Ryan Adams.
Oldham said BAF first approached TLRMC about hosting a book fair three years ago, and since that time, the hospital has collaborated with BAF on four occasions.
“The book fair usually does really well, I think, because it brings a lot of items that you can’t find in Leitchfield,” Oldham said.
Adams said the book fair sells merchandise at 50 to 70% of its regular price, and all the proceeds go directly to the Auxiliary.
Adams said the event is typically very successful, and “the indication of the success is that you have a really good volunteer crew to get behind it. They advertise it really well. Not only are [donors] getting great products at great prices, but they also get to help the community.”
The next book fair at TLRMC will take place on December 5 and 6.
