A special proclamation signing and the planting of a pinwheel garden at the Grayson County Judicial Center on Friday morning were held in order to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Student representatives from each of the area public schools were present for the event and placed pinwheels in the ground outside the Judicial Center along with a sign explaining their purpose. Such ‘gardens’ will be found throughout the county in the following days.

The blue and silver pinwheel is the national symbol for child abuse prevention, and the local campaign is aimed at not only drawing attention to this important issue, but also “[transforming] this awareness into action,” according to Judge Shan Embry, who spoke to the students present.

“Our most basic obligation is to support the health and well-being of our children. That’s my belief.” Embry said.

Students across the county received pledge sheets on Friday, encouraging them to “use my ears for listening, my eyes for watching over the safety of others, my heart for truly loving, and my voice for gentle words. But most of all, I will use my hands for helping and not hurting.”

“If you sign it,” Embry told the children who were on-hand at the presentation, “you need to mean it.”
