The Twin Lakes area has two upcoming clean-up events scheduled to keep our local waterways pristine. Volunteers are more than welcome at both Rough River Lake and Nolin Lake to lend a hand in preserving these precious natural resources.

The first event is the Rough River Trash Bash, which will be held on Saturday, September 8, and is hosted by Friends of Rough River Lake, Inc.

This yearly event begins at 8 a.m. with trash pick-up, and concludes with free food, drinks and entertainment along with plenty of great door prizes for volunteers.

The “bash” runs from noon until 2:30 p.m. at the Rough River Dam State Resort Park and is always great fun for the participants.

Volunteers can begin their morning by meeting up at Axtel, Brown’s Hideaway, Cave Creek, Eveleigh, Indian Valley, Laurel Branch, North Fork, Peter Cave, or the State Park Boat ramps. They may choose to clean up either on land or by boat, with boat launch fees being waived for the event.

For more information about this event, you can contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rough River Lake at 257-2061, Rough River Dam State Resort Park at 257-2311 or Friends of Rough River Lake, Inc. at 257-0744.

The following Saturday, September 15, is Nolin Lake’s turn to receive some TLC from volunteers at the Nolin River Lake Clean-Up.

The lakeshore clean-up campaign is in it’s fourth year, and according to Friends of Nolin Lake, it provides “a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to volunteer, make a difference on Nolin Lake and enjoy and promote environmental stewardship in our community.”

Trash pick-up starts at 8 a.m. and volunteers can take their pick between working from Moutardier Ramp, Wax Ramp, Dog Creek Ramp or Nolin Lake State Park Ramp.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring along a pontoon to help transport volunteers along the lakeshore.

A volunteer appreciation event will follow at Wax which will include music, food and some wonderful prizes.

Volunteers are reminded to bring along drinking water and a first-aid kid for minor cuts and insect bites. Also, it is a good idea to wear work gloves and sturdy boots if possible and to wear a life jacket while boating.

Volunteers with children under the age of 18 can also take advantage of Nolin’s Family Camping Weekend and only pay half the normal camping fees at Wax, Moutardier and Dog Creek campgrounds for the weekend.

For more information about the Nolin River Lake Clean-Up, you can contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Nolin River Lake at 286-4511.
