The Kosair Shriners and The Leitchfield Shrine Club will be hosting a fundraising car show at M & D’s Marina and Campground next Saturday, October 13.

The goal of the event, according to Roger Mitchell, with the Kosair Shriners, is to “raise enthusiasm” and help get the Shriners group well-established in our community.

The Shriners, who many people are familiar with for their participation in local parades with their unmistakable hats and miniature cars, are a group dedicated to helping children who need specialized medical treatment through one of the many Shriner’s hospitals in the nation.

The nearest such facility to Leitchfield is Kosair’s Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

“In the past three days, I’ve talked with three families whose kids were treated at Kosair,” Mitchell said, “That’s why I do this.”

Charlie Templeman, who has been a member of the Shriners for decades, said “Our primary goal is to repair crippled children that can’t otherwise afford it.”

He also mentioned that the group tries to help children with burns and other injuries or conditions as well.

“We furnish the money and have worked for a whole lot of kids,” he continued, adding that the group’s contributions often go undetected because “we don’t make a lot of publicity about it.”

Templeman, who is now 93-years-old, said that while he can no longer be as active as he once was in the group, he is pleased to have a grandson who he says will one day replace him in these efforts.

Of the effort to rally enthusiasm and support for the group in Grayson County, Templeman said, “We need a boost in it, alright. There’s no doubt about that.”

Mayor William “Turkey” Thomason, who has seen the Shriners’ efforts in our community, said of the group, “They’ve really done a great amount of work.”

Thomason expressed his gratitude to the local club as well as the Kosair Shriners of Louisville for helping with the fair, parades, and other events, as well as for what they do for local children.

Saturday’s car show will hopefully raise some local awareness for the group’s involvement as well as funds to help children in need of medical attention.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 2 p.m., and the cost will be $15 per car. The first 50 entrants will receive dash plaques, and trophies will be awarded to the winning cars.

Awards will be presented at 4 p.m., and there will be plenty of food, music and fun.

The event will take place at M & D’s Marina and Campground, which is located on Peter Cave Ramp Road around six miles north of Leitchfield.

Anyone interested in getting more information about the event can contact the marina at 259-4859.
