A tipsters call led to the discovery of a methamphetamine lab on West Walnut Street in Leitchfield Monday night, April 8, according to Sheriff Rick Clemmons.

Responding officer Deputy Buck Meredith said that the tip came in to Clarkson Police Chief Jeff King, who then notified the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

Meredith, along with Detective Jeff Kelsey, Special Deputies Joey Beasley and Mark Stanton, and Leitchfield Police Department’s Tim Moutardier, responded to the call at approximately 8 p.m., parking just down the street from 403 W. Walnut Street, and approaching the residence on foot.

Meredith said that the officers saw two male subjects standing near a pick-up truck in front of the house. When the officers identified themselves, both men fled on foot for several hundred yards and were ultimately subdued by the officers.

The officers returned to the property from which the men had fled and found what appeared to be a meth lab inside the truck, along with a small amount of finished methamphetamine and several meth pre-cursors. These items were discovered inside a duffel bag in the vehicle, Meredith said.

One of the subjects, 36-year-old Derrick Childress, was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, second offense; possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) in the first degree, second offense; fleeing or evading police in the second degree; and resisting arrest.

Childress also had previous warrants out for his arrest for parole violations, Meredith said. He is currently lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

The second subject’s name is not being released at this point.

Further charges may be pending, and investigation is ongoing.
